From the 29th of June to the 4th of July, 2025, the Inter-University Centre (IUC) Dubrovnik hosted the 10th anniversary edition of the international summer school Summer School on Real-World Crypto and Privacy, a leading educational initiative in the field of computer security and privacy. This renowned summer school, led by Prof. Lejla Batina (Radboud University, Netherlands) and Prof. Stjepan Picek (Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computing, Zagreb and Radboud University), was held in Dubrovnik for the first time, further enriching the city’s scientific and educational profile.
A Milestone at a New Location: Dubrovnik as a Hub for Cybersecurity
Launched in 2014, the summer school had previously been held in Šibenik and Vodice, but for this special anniversary edition, the organizers chose the attractive and historically rich destination of Dubrovnik. The decision to celebrate the tenth anniversary here highlighted the city as a desirable location for international academic and scientific gatherings.
Over the course of six intensive days, Dubrovnik welcomed more than 130 participants from 32 countries across nearly all continents, including academic researchers, students, industry professionals, and representatives of the most relevant institutions in the field of cybersecurity.
Top-Level Lectures and Hands-On Workshops
Participants had the opportunity to attend lectures and workshops led by some of the most respected experts in the field of computer security. Notable lecturers included Prof. Bart Preneel from KU Leuven (Belgium), one of Europe’s most esteemed cryptographers; Prof. Yuval Yarom from Ruhr University Bochum (Germany), known for his research on side-channel attacks; and Dr. Elissa M. Redmiles from Georgetown University (USA), an expert in privacy and user behaviour.
A total of 11 lectures and 6 workshops were held, covering a wide range of topics, from the theoretical foundations of cryptography to the latest challenges in data protection, software security, algorithmic resilience, and the application of privacy in everyday digital life. This structured program allowed participants to gain both deep theoretical knowledge and practical skills relevant to their careers.
More Than Science: Exploring Dubrovnik and Networking
In addition to the academic component, the organizers prepared a rich social program, allowing participants to better explore the Dubrovnik area. Guided walks through the historic Old City were organized, and a special highlight was a group excursion to the Elaphiti Islands, offering relaxation and networking in an informal atmosphere.
This event not only marked an important milestone for the summer school itself but also further positioned Dubrovnik as an attractive destination for future academic and scientific initiatives in high technology and cybersecurity.
