Summer in Dubrovnik is marked by numerous cultural events and festivals. One of them is the Midsummer Scene Festival – the only Croatian theatre festival in the English language. For this reason, it is an ideal opportunity to offer international participants of business and professional conferences or congresses in Dubrovnik a true cultural treat. The Dubrovnik Midsummer Scene, from the 22nd of June to the 7th of July, celebrates ten years of rich cultural offerings and international cooperation. On this occasion, it offers an exceptionally rich cultural content that connects Dubrovnik with the world on the world's most beautiful stage – the Dubrovnik fortress Lovrjenac.
A Spectacular Journey Around the World in 90 Minutes
This year's festival highlight is a spectacular musical – an adaptation of Jules Verne's classic "Around the World in 80 Days". Last year's world premiere of this hit captured the hearts of the audience, and this year it returns with even greater splendour and excitement. Visitors can expect plenty of fun, romance, and adventure with can-can dancers, balloon flights, train wrecks, elephants, all complemented by an irresistible dose of slapstick and catchy melodies.
The adaptation is signed by the award-winning English playwright and director Sean Aita, while the music is composed by the French actor and composer Leo Elso. The musical will be performed by an excellent five-member acting ensemble who, by playing more than forty roles and with their performance, singing, and acting, will take visitors on a journey around the world in just ninety minutes.
In addition to this main production, which will be performed 15 times during the festival, visitors will have the opportunity to enjoy a diverse program at the Rector's Palace, which includes the musical performance "Marlene Dietrich" by the dramatic actress Ksenija Prohaska and the concert "The Stringbreaker" by the renowned composer and pianist Matej Meštrović, dedicated to the year of UNESCO World Heritage in Dubrovnik.
More than 200 Performances and 30,000 Spectators from Around the World
Over the past years, Midsummer Scene has become a recognizable international theatrical event in the unique setting of the Lovrjenac fortress in Dubrovnik. In the past nine highly successful seasons, the festival has been attended by more than 30,000 visitors from all over the world, and over 200 performances have been staged in its own production in English, which has been followed by numerous praises and covered in more than 1,500 media publications both domestic and international.
This year, the festival promises an unforgettable experience for all art and culture lovers. Midsummer Scene is a project of the Dubrovnik Tourist Board and the City of Dubrovnik, produced by Brilliant Events Dubrovnik and Honey-Tongued Theatre Productions Ltd. London, and realized in cooperation with Dubrovnik's cultural institutions with the help of sponsors and tourism entities in Dubrovnik.
