At the entrance to the city, as a shield against the plague, the Church of St. Sebastian was built in 1466. It was constructed by Mihoč Radišić and Vlatko Dešković, and in the following decades, numerous local craftsmen carved the architectural decorations, choir, and other elements. The Renaissance semi-circular apse of this church is the first example of its kind in Dubrovnik's sacred architecture. In 1808, the French converted the church into a prison, and today it houses an art gallery. Beneath the church are located stone-carving workshops and stone storage areas.
