Soon after the Republic established a shipyard in Gruž in 1525, the shipbuilder's fraternity had the Church of St Nicholas of the Shipyard (od Škara) erected in its immediate vicinity in 1727. It was built by Đivko Pavlov. Services were held in this church on the occasion of ships launchings, on Sundays and during celebrations of religious holidays. The Church interior contains numerous silver and gold ex-votos, as well as some paintings of the sailing vessels donated by the seafarers.
