Before stepping onto the wooden bridge that leads from Pile, the western entrance to the city, it’s worth looking up at the sky. Below the great statue of Saint Blaise, the story or legend is told in stone through three heads—one of a bearded man and two women. An interesting tradition accompanies them. Legend has it that they were placed to remind people of the forbidden love affairs between the Clarisses and the Franciscans. Perhaps, if we could somehow return to the past, these three stone heads might tell a completely different story, one less about death and love, hidden secrets, and hidden intentions, and more about pragmatic circumstances. Although silent in their stone stillness, these heads tell stories that everyone interprets in their own way.
