Dubrovnik's Orlando's Column is adorned with the figure of a medieval knight holding a sword, with the characteristic Gothic smile on his face framed by curls, and is considered one of the finest Rolands in Europe. It was created according to a contract from 1418 by Bonino of Milan, with the assistance of local craftsmen.
Orlando's Column is a symbol of statehood, and the mast beside it once flew the flag of the Dubrovnik Republic, while today it flies the flag of the Republic of Croatia.
During the Festivities of Saint Blaise, Dubrovnik's patron saint, the column is decorated with a banner bearing his image, and during the Dubrovnik Summer Festival it carries the Libertas flag.
