Revelin Fortress

Tvrđava Revelin

The powerful fortress at the eastern entrance to the city was named after the Renaissance-style defensive structure known as a ravelin, designed to protect a key strategic point. In ancient times, the main road leading out of the city passed through this location, and in the 14th century there was a suburb here with several houses and gardens, which from 1433 to 1449 was enclosed by a strong earth embankment and a wall more than five metres high.

Construction on the present-day Revelin began in 1539 according to the proposal and general design of Antonio Ferramolino from Bergamo, and its construction lasted until 1605.

In the earthquake of 1667 Revelin was not damaged, so it temporarily housed the state treasury and the cathedral treasury, and sessions of the government of the Republic were also held there until the Rector's Palace was restored. During Austrian rule, it was partitioned and converted into a barracks.
